China Talk Tuesday: Chinese New Year!!!

Oh my goodness...kids, could you POSSIBLY have missed that Chinese New Year is on its way?? This weekend??? On Valentine's Day????!

That's right - our beloved red n' gold, money-slingin', noodle eatin' holiday is on the same day as our OTHER beloved red n' pink, rose slingin', chocolate eatin' holiday. Booyah!

Seeing as it's such a big week for us, I've been thinking all day about how I wanted to share it with y'all. Here's what I've decided: I'm going to keep track of what we do to celebrate, and I'll stop in periodically to share it with y'all. Sound good?

In the meantime, here's a fun post I found this morning: Over at Jaden's Steamy Kitchen, she's posted a list of what they're eating for dinner this Saturday. In China, and on New Years especially, foods carry a lot of meaning. Noodles are left long to represent long life, lotus roots are served to represent family unity, and whole fish are served to represent...I'm not sure, but nobody thinks it's good luck to take a perfectly lovely fish and hack it to bits. That CAN'T mean anything good!

So, head on over to Jaden's Kitchen, and then pop back in here (or subscribe in a reader) to see how New Years is going to go down this year, LoLo style!

  1. I am a huge fan of Jaden's (read the blog, have the book, bought the tee shirt .... err, wait - well, you get the idea). However, today's post overwhelmed me. I really am trying to do right by Emi, and adding Chinese New Year into our family holidays is something that we do. However, that's a WHOLE lotta food for the three of us. I am sure I can pick and choose (I mean, no one's going to knock on my door and make sure I made each dish) but geesh, yeah, overwhelming.

I am looking forward to seeing what you are going to do. I have a few (very few, we are sicker than dogs right now - ugh) things planned. I'd love to do a few things that are fun and easy with Emi. There isn't anything we can actually go to that is less than an hour's drive so I think we will be doing our own thing this year. Hints, suggestions, to-do lists welcome!

    Cheers, Kiy

  2. Tell you something.... I'm not even going to be home for new year's eve. The family will be in a hotel in Montreal. It's a very last minute vacation. I can't even tell you what kind of dinner we'll be having. :)
