Goldfish for Breakfast

Baby Ying Ying is not a huge fan of the sitting in the high chair and the putting the food into the mouth. In fact, she has very little patience for it. I struggle to find anything she will feed herself, or allow me to feed her, let alone something that is nutritious.

Baby steps, people. She saw her sister snacking on goldfish, and deigned to sit down and eat a few of those.

She ate a few, and the rest were unceremoniously swept onto the floor, to be enjoyed at her leisure. *sigh*

(PS - My girls, apparently, both have an affinity for spotted cats. Heh. Meow!)

PhotoOp: Siu Jeun “reads”

Ok, this video is several months old at this point, but I just found it on my video camera…and I had to share. (Sorry – my blog, my rules!)

So, around the time I recorded this, Ming Wai had memorized her entire Sleeping Beauty story book. She loved to “read” it to herself, and gave special emphasis to the part about how Sleeping Beauty DIES. After pricking her finger on a SPINDLE.

As you can see, it had quite an effect on her little brother.

Photo Op: Halloween Parting Shots

Because the kids are cute. Because Ming Wai’s tutu was a gift from a friend before we left Connecticut. Because stupid pictures of me make me laugh.

Enjoy.

IMG_6332 IMG_6320 IMG_6321 IMG_6322 IMG_6323(Quick story: I lead the choir in my congregation. Among those that come out to sing are a mother (Rebecca) and daughter (Christy). Christy has taken piano lessons with Aunt Myrnie (pictured above) for several years. Rebecca told me the following story, which took place in her car after our first choir rehearsal.

Christy: Mom, why does Sister LoLo know my name??

Rebecca: Well, sweetie, she grew up in this ward…she’s known you for a long time, even if you don’t know her!

Christy: Yes, but…well, when she talks, why does she sound just like my piano teacher?!

Poor thing hadn’t QUITE put it together that if your piano teacher and your choir teacher are identical twins…chances are, they’ll have more in common than just their maiden names and their faces!  For example, they might also both know your name…and sound just alike when they say it!)

(Aunt Myrnie? Don’t tell her that I know that story. *grin*)

PhotoOp: A Touch of Spring, A Tad Early

In memoriam. Rest in Peace.

These were our "forced" tulips. They lived short, but gloriously vibrant and green, lives.

We shall remember you always!

PhotoOp: First Packed Lunch!

Not exactly stop-the-presses type news, but Ming Wai had her first "field trip" today, and I packed her up a little lunch to take along: PB and sprinkles (yes, really) on homemade french bread, butternut squash cake, and cut strawberries.

(She went with her fellow Joy School-mates out to a farm in New York state. Ming Wai informs me that there were horses, chickens, "small birds with ladies", and a complete and utter lack of elephants. And sheep.)

PhotoOp: Siu Jeun at Tarrywile

We met up with a friend at a local park for a photo shoot, and I got to practice my Photo Skilz.

Since this blog (let's be real) is all about the bragging, I'm gonna spread the love out a bit. I thought I'd start with a few shots of Siu Jeun. It's hard to get a great shot of him, because his face is always contorting, and he's usually cavorting somewhere around my shins.

Well, you'll see what I mean.

Photo Op: A Family Portrait

We had a friend snap a picture of our crew after BBJ's birthday party last weekend. Let's play a game. You need to find:
1 over-peopled birthday girl
2 children watching someone else play with their toys
1 Let's-Take-A-Happy-Picture! mama
1 Happy-to-Make-The-Wife-Happy daddy
2 parents who are just happy to have survived the party
1 family who loves each other very much

Photo Op: Sarcasm is Wasted on the Young

When I was growing up, my mother always had a garden, and it always contained at least two things: green beans and tomatoes.
Those two things seemed to need constant picking. Every day, a few new ones would be ripe. If you waited until the following day to pick them, they'd be over-ripe. So...we picked. Every day. (Or, rather, she picked.)
One night after dinner I told her I was bored. Never mind the fact that I had three siblings to play with, a room full of toys and books and there was a mountain of dinner dishes that could probably have used my help.
I, the 8 year old, was bored.
My mother shot me a look and said, "Then go pick beans!" She then turned back to whatever she was doing and left me to myself.
I went outside with a bucket and picked beans.
Half an hour later, she came out. "LoLo, we've been looking everywhere for you. What are you doing?!"
"I'm picking beans!" I replied, confused.
It was only when she sighed and rolled her eyes that I realized...she hadn't been serious.
Which brings us to last week.
BBJ is given quite a bit of leeway in her bedtime routine. A few weeks ago, she asked that we leave the lights on in her room while she's falling asleep. We tried it - it doesn't actually add to the time she stays awake, and has cut the screaming that can sometime occur down to nothing. She sits in bed, reading books and singing to herself, until she quietly lays down, tucks herself in, and falls asleep. I go in afterwards to turn off the lights and move the mountain of books onto the floor.
Then, last week she gave me a mischievous look after we had read our goodnight stories and said, "Mommy, I want to sleep on the floor!"
Hmm. Not worth an argument.
"Fine! Get in bed if you're cold. Goodnight."
I came back two hours later to tuck her in. And found this.
She slept there the next two nights, which meant that I was in there at 10:30, hauling her 34 pounds back into her bed.
On the third day, she announced before her nap that she was going to sleep on the floor. I saw the glint in her eye. Again, not worth the argument.
"Fine. Get the blanket from your bed if you get cold."
As I turned to leave, I saw that her eyes had lit up and she was grinning from ear to ear.
She slept on the floor, curled up in a blanket.
Luckily, the next day she opened the first of her birthday presents - a big box of books. As everyone knows, books are much more fun when you're snuggled up in bed. She hasn't asked to sleep on the floor in a few days.
*Phew!* She's heavy to pick up at night!
