Memorial Day

November 2010 016

My brain is everywhere…and nowhere. As I write this, it’s just after 10 pm on Sunday night. We spent a few hours on Saturday, with my fabulous father, getting some yard re-doing out of the way. He He-Manned all of our lawn out for us, and then we planted a bunch of shrubs. And it wasn’t until tonight that I realized I had a flower garden in my front yard now. *squee*

We had church today, and Siu Jeun spent about 2/3 of the Sacrament Meeting out in the hall, on his Dad’s lap. Lo Gung said he was doing sit-ups the entire time…and was completely silent. Now, why can’t he do that in the chapel, eh?

We had dinner with the whole family tonight – a burrito bar. It was delicious, and if you don’t already have your meals planned out for this week, I highly recommend it. And completely customizable! Mine was filled to overflowing with rice, beans, pork shoulder, guac, sour cream, salsa, cilantro, tomatoes, radishes and two kinds of cheese. Lo Gung’s was a more sedate rice-beans-cheese-meat affair, with some veg. Ming Wai? Well, she wanted a tortilla filled with lettuce…and salad dressing, if you don’t mind. That’s my girl – the only person I know who can spend twenty minutes actively eating, and not actually consume any calories.

Now, I am exhausted, but wanted to wish you all…a good Memorial Day. I made the mistake of calling my Mother in Law up on the Chinese version of Memorial Day and wishing her a Happy one. It was the grave decorating day for your ancestors, so she didn’t think my merry wishes were particularly appropriate. Heh. Oops.

So, my friends…perhaps we should just remember to spare a thought for those that have gone before, to give us the freedoms we have now.

And when you fire up the BBQ with your friends today, maybe just throw on an extra dog, in their memory. I’m sure they’d appreciate it.

The picture has nothing to do with anything, other than it’s one of the oldest pictures on my hard drive, dating back to November. Siu Jeun is pretty flexible, for a boy. By which I mean to say that the men on my side of the family are not the type of men who generally fold in half. They are more the type that cannot be moved – the strong type that rip up lawns in an hour and a half, and then dig half a dozen holes for your plants for fun. That type.

  1. It's cute that he's bendy. :) Jarrah is ridiculously bendy, too. She did the splits naturally on her first day of gymnastics. Grrr. I did gymnastics for years and said "ow!" if I spread my legs a little. ;)

  2. We do a burrito bar thing, but we call it BurrTacos. LOVE it. I haven't had it on the menu for a few months, so I think it's ready for a comeback. The funny thing is that I love cilantro, but never thought to add it to the lineup! One thing I have that you DON'T, though, is sauted bell peppers! Oh, and Gabi totally eats the same way, lol.
