First off - a ramen tip. (Yes, ramen is Japanese. Yes, I'm talking about those plastic pouches full of dried, squiggely noodles with packets of MSG-laced "chicken" powder.)

In Hong Kong, ramen is called 拉麵 (lai min) and the most popular brand is Doll Instant Noodles (公仔麵 - gung jai min). Until Lo Gung actually purchased Doll brand noodles on our recent trip to Philadelphia, I had no idea there WAS such a brand...just that that's what everybody called ramen in Hong Kong.
So, if your kids love ramen as much as mine do, then perhaps this tip will help you out:
1) Heat up about 2" of water in a sauce pot. Bring to a boil.
2) Add the noodles, stir to separate, about three minutes or until desired doneness. (My MIL canNOT make noodles without asking if we want them hard or soft. I never developed a particular preference, but the same cannot be said for my various inlaws.)
3) When noodles have cooked as much as you want them to, (here comes the tip, folks), take the pot to the sink, add about 3 seconds of cold water, place your cooking chopsticks along the edge of the pot to trap the noodles, and pour all the cooking water out.
(The cold water makes the noodles sink, and makes it easier to dump off the oily cooking water.)
4) Add a little more water to the pan, and return to your (off) burner. (It's still hot - it will heat up the new water just fine.)
5) Add any seasonings you like, and serve!
(We like to put pieces of lettuce in the bottom of the bowl and let the broth cook them, or put a fried egg on top. Yummy!)
There you go! Now, you too can make ramen like a Hong Kongian.

Now, the reason I almost forgot about this post? Well, see, on Sunday I was trying to get ahead. I put together the bare bones for about 6 posts, stored them as drafts, and planned to schedule them ahead or finish them throughout the week. I completely forgot that Tuesday ought to be a special post, and went ahead and scheduled the Schooling post to go up on Tuesday morning. My bad! As I'm writing this, I just realized I don't want to get ahead of myself. There will be more details forthcoming, but for now, let's just say that I am trying REALLY hard to be more organized so that I can get everything done that needs to be done during the day! (My personal hobbies - blogging, sewing, baking cookies, eating cookies, etc. - are part of that Need to Be Done category, for my own personal sanity. ;-))
And yes, I'm baiting you into guessing. ;-) I'm mean like that.
(Mother, I'm NOT PREGNANT. Don't even ask.)

That looks yummy! I can tell I'm growing up, because I used to be horrified by the idea of fried eggs on top of things, and now it looks good to me. :)
ReplyDeleteThe girls LOVE ramen noodles...I may just have to try making them your way. What is your favorite seasoning to add to them?
ReplyDeleteBTW, I know exactly why you are so busy and can I just say that our whole family is really happy for you. In fact, we were talking about it tonight after we read scriptures. Madison is a little sad but she is extremely excited for you as well!!
How about that first comment?!?!!! And also... are you pregnant?
ReplyDeleteOkay, how funny that I am sitting here eating uncooked Ramen Noodles as I read this! I am SO going to try this the next time I make Ramen!
ReplyDeleteAnd the egg too! YUM!
And I am the worst guesser...but you could TELL ME! ;D
I remembered that iWonderWoman gave me the 500 ways to use ramen noodles book for my birthday. I think that was the first gift that I received from iWonderWoman!! HAHA.
