Happy Birthday, Daddy!

On Saturday, we celebrated Louh Gung's 30th Birthday. (Not to say that Saturday was Daddy's birthday, but it was the day that we celebrated it!)

I was very happy with the way the birthday party went! Louh Gung's favorite way to eat his cake is in a Bundt shape, no frosting thank-you-very-much, and a sprinkle of powdered sugar...chocolate cake, of course.

Friday night, I got to work baking three chocolate Bundt cakes. I coordinated with my sister to bring her cute little shaker full of powdered sugar. I checked the RSVPs from our online invitation. I made sure I had enough hot dogs, buns and condiments to feed everyone at least three times over. I organized the briquettes, matches and a grill master. I had asked everyone to come with a side dish to share. (That's my favorite trick, and a mandatory one after BBJ joined the family. Louh Gung requested that I never have a dinner party where I prepare all of the dishes, in consideration of my temper and his sanity!)

Saturday morning, I took BBJ to the Farmer's Market. What a fabulous place! There was a gentleman selling zucchini, 3 for $1. (I know, I know...crazy to actually buy it, but it was cheap, mine are all still the size of golf balls, and I didn't know my friends' gardens were all full of 10 lb monsters! Besides, BBJ just decided that she likes the stuff. Really likes it. That's the only thing I never find on the floor!)
I also bought a beautiful bouquet of flowers for $5 (hi, Marci and Kevin!)
...and, I couldn't help myself. There was a woman selling ADORABLE little aprons for little girls. I got one for BBJ for her birthday. More about that later!)

With my prizes in tow, I headed home and awaited the arrival of Louh Gung. Oh, that's right - I did all the preparations ALONE, while he was off on one of his business trips. I guess there are perks to that arrangement, right? I mean, if he was home, would I have had my evening free to bake three chocolate cakes? Probably not. But then, I wouldn't have needed to - he would have been able to watch BBJ so I could do it much earlier! Oh well.

Finally, Daddy's plane landed, Daddy came home safely, we loaded up, and we were off! Well, I mean, it was 6 blocks down the street to a park, but it was a trick getting everything in the car and back out again!

The party was a lot of fun. We had a lot of good friends show up, and there were a lot of tasty side dishes! (Have you ever had ambrosia salad with cookies crumbled in it? DELICIOUS! Goodness. Or smoked English Cheddar with Carmelized Onions? To die for!)

Louh Gung spent the first part of the party challenging all willing parties to tennis matches, and then he presided over the cake.

BBJ spent her time wandering the fields, alone.

I think she liked the freedom, and I loved being able to let her roam without worrying about her. When she wasn't roaming, my family thought the best place for her was somewhere up in space.
One thing's for sure, she'll never be afraid of heights!
We ended up the day with a surprise visit from some new friends who live behind our back fence and one right turn. She had been out fishing Saturday morning for salmon and offered to share part of her catch with me! I had thought she was going to walk it over here. Oh no - she got her her cell phone and wandered up and down the fence until we figured out where my backyard was...and pop comes the baggie of salmon over the fence! Not to be outdone, I chucked her plastic containers she left here on Wednesday back at her. Not a bad way to get your fish! It felt clandestine and...just plain fun!
She was a total sweetie and gave me part of the tail section....and the roe. What do I DO with salmon roe, exactly?!
