Mini Vacation, Day 2: Niagara Falls, NY

On day two of our fabulous little mini vacation, we loaded up the kids and drove 90 minutes north to Niagara Falls, New York. It was an absolutely beautiful day – sunny but not too hot. We were very lucky the entire trip – there were hardly any crowds anywhere we went.  Niagara Falls was no different!

Enjoy the photos.

At the top of one of the falls, a small wall had been built to block the water at the very corner, showing what the riverbed looked like. Solid rock!

Oh, and I didn’t realize before this trip that Niagara Falls is not actually one waterfall…it’s several different rivers, all converging in one amazing glacier-carved mash up.

A family shot, taken by a nice passerby (which is why Ming Wai won’t look at the camera) and a shot over to the Canadian side.

Ming Wai enjoyed pushing her brother through the near-empty park. On your right, you can see a shot, again, over to the Canadian side, looking at their Maiden of the Mist boat. We road one on the American side, and definitely a highlight! The boat leaves from the dock with all its blue poncho-clad passengers and travels into the mist at the base of the falls. You get a little wet, and it’s just amazing! Of course, if you would have been a passenger on our boat, you would have seen one lone little non-blue body. And that body would have had pigtails and a pink fleece jacket. *sigh* Gotta give her kudos for sticking to her guns! She never once complained about the mist coating her body.

Siu Jeun rather enjoyed his turn through the mist. Oh, and this little “step up” sign made me giggle – one of the “s” pieces had fallen off, leaving “tep up”…which is exactly how my daughter says it.

There was a path that lead along the river above the falls. We all took a little sneak off the path and stuck our hands in the water. Why not?! Oh, and check out that nearly perfect rainbow we found when looking over the falls from the observation platform.

Ming Wai is beginning to recognize the possibilities of a pretty landscape and a camera around Mommy’s neck.

Also, a view from the top of one of the falls, looking down the river and back at the other fall.

It was a great day, the kids survived admirably, and we had a fabulous time!

  1. Only you would work in the phrase "mash up" when talking about Niagara... you Glee addict, you. Glad y'all had such fun.

  2. Those are some great shots! We will definitely have to go during the spring.

Good luck on the move! Sounds exciting! We're from the west coast too, but not planning on ever moving back.
